Whether you are a passionate homeowner seeking to enhance your curb appeal or a diligent property manager aiming to maintain an impeccable exterior, understanding how to seal your driveway is crucial. A well-maintained driveway not only adds elegance but also safeguards against various environmental factors that can wreak havoc on its surface over time. From harsh weather conditions like freezing temperatures and scorching heat, to the relentless assault from oil stains, cracks, and weeds – driveways endure constant wear and tear. By utilising proper sealing techniques, you can effectively shield your driveway from these adversaries while prolonging its lifespan significantly.

The majority of block paving driveways are concrete based (if  it is a natural stone driveway it would be best to use a specialist sealant prescribed by the manufacturer). Once your driveway has been laid it usually takes 3-4 months for the paving to settle and any salts released. Therefore we would recommend waiting approximately 6 months before applying any sealant. It should also be noted that using a sealant not recommended by the block manufacturer could void your warranty. For example Marshalls don’t supply sealant and using a sealant on their products would make the warranty void.

Before applying the sealant, the driveway should be professionally cleaned and re-sanded.

The role of the sealant is to protect the paving, and most offer UV protection, although no sealant will protect 100% against fading. They also help to prevent weeds and moss from growing in the joints.

For concrete based paving there are two main types of sealant:

1. Polyurethane – an oil based sealant

2. Acrylic – water based

The acrylic sealant will need re-coating every few years. Polyurethane is much more hard wearing and is our sealant of choice. However this sealant needs to be applied properly, preferably by a professional. The sealant should be applied evenly and consistently.

In essence, sealing your driveway is one way to enhance its longevity and preserve its overall appearance. By investing in this preventive measure, you are essentially safeguarding your driveway against the harsh elements it regularly endures such as traffic, extreme temperatures, and various environmental factors. The sealant acts as a protective barrier that shields the underlying structure of your driveway from potential damage caused by oil spills, water penetration, or chemical exposure. Ultimately, opting for professional driveway sealing services ensures that you maintain a pristine curb appeal while extending the lifespan of this essential part of your property.
